Basketball Basics

Here’s a quick guide to help you understand the game your boys love to play:

Objective

The goal is simple – score points by shooting the basketball through the opponent’s hoop. The team with the most points at the end wins.

Teams

Each team has five players on the court at a time. They play offense (trying to score) and defense (trying to prevent the other team from scoring).

Game Structure:

The MWBA competition allows for 2 x 18 minute halves with a brief break in between.

Scoring:

  • Field Goals: Points are scored by making a basket from the field. Shots made from outside the three-point line earn three points, while those made inside it are worth two points.
  • Free Throws: Awarded after certain fouls. Each successful free throw is worth one point.

Fouls: When a player breaks the rules, a foul is called. The opposing team may be awarded free throws or keep possession of the ball. There are a few different types of fouls but the main ones to keep an eye on are.

  • Personal Fouls: When a single player accumulates 5 personal fouls, they are ‘fouled out’ and have to sit out the remainder of the game.
  • Team Fouls: When a team accumulates 8 fouls in the same half, the opposing team enters a ‘bonus’ situation and is awarded free throws for each foul regardless of type.
